A know-how that is transmitted through the generations

The founder of the Monuments Sebastiano Aiello, a prolific sculptor

Sebastiano Aiello (1908-1987) founded the company in 1927. During his career, Mr. Aiello made sculptures for an impressive number of churches and public and private buildings, including the art deco sculptures of the Montreal Central Station and those of the Canada Post Central Office in Ottawa.

Many achievements

Mr. Aiello is also the man behind the majestic heraldic lions that adorn the facades of post offices in Hamilton and London, Ontario. He also designed the ornaments for the art deco fountain in the Montreal Botanical Garden, and the facade of the Bank of Canada in Ottawa, the library of Dalhousie University in Halifax and the building of the daily newspaper The Globe and Mail in Toronto. We also owe him the pulpit of the Anglican Christ Church Cathedral in Montreal, as well as the statues of the Virgin and Saint Joseph above the side altars of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Edmundston.

A witness to history

In addition to making the exterior sculptures and statues, Sebastiano Aiello, helped by a fellow sculptor, made cupboards on the lower wall of the choir and on either side of the staircase of the sanctuary in black marble from Belgium of Moncton Cathedral, where he arrived in 1940. On the east side are cabinets used at the time by Saint-Joseph University in Memramcook, Sainte-Anne College in Pointe-de-l'Eglise in New -Scotland and Sacred Heart College in Bathurst. The two sculptors also made the cupboards for the congregation of the Daughters of Marie-de-l'Assomption, founded in Campbellton by Mgr. L.-J.-Arthur Melanson, and those of the Religious of Notre-Dame de Sacré-Coeur at the bottom of the wall of the choir on the west side. Two elegant garlands of maple leaves and daisies, delicately carved, adorn the whole on the frieze.
